I made a thread about making an owl potholder in DIY. People spammed pictures and one user was severely asspained because I didn't include a link to where I took the instructions from. I PM'd moaninglisa to remove the spam. This was his response:

A. stop plagiarizing.
B. I will remove all spiderman and spam posts, not the ones directly showing you plagiarized
C.I will give CH a 1-point 1-hour infraction for spam.

Since when is "plagiarizing" a topic of concern on here? Why is a serious thread allowed to be derailed because I didn't include a link to the source? On a section like DIY that gets virtually 0 traffic you'd think you might have a very easy time removing spam posts from the one thread posted in the past month.

So, is plagiarism aka not posting a link now a legitimate reason for people to derail a thread?

I don't condone the derailing of threads, but it happens all the time. It mostly depends on the mod for how much derailment is tolerated. Before we explore this further, I ask you, how was CH's post derailing your thread? It was related to the OP and, if anything, added just another source of related information for further reading.

It's not an issue that he posted the source in post #5. Arguing about how I was "plagiarizing" because I didn't post a source is counter productive and off topic.

But if you copypasta something without saying "I didn't write this" or linking to the original article people are going to assume it's your original work. And I'd say they're justified in pointing out that it's not. Perhaps bringing in Spiderman went a little too far.

Again, it was a lulzy post but instead of recognizing it as obvious copypasta everyone acted surprised and shocked that I posted something that probably should have gone in IFIOTW in DIY without linking. Boo. Hoo. TUFF owl is still TUFF.
